The Membrane Structures Association of Japan is a general incorporated association that promotes various activities aiming to “secure the safety of the membrane structures and promote sound prevalence and development by improving the performance and construction technology of the membrane structures, in order to contribute to the enhancement of public welfare.”

Objectives To secure the safety of the membrane structures and promote sound prevalence and development by improving the performance and construction technology of the membrane structures, in order to contribute to the enhancement of public welfare.

  1. Research on improving the performance and construction technology of the membrane structures
  2. Investigation and testing of the performance and quality of the membrane structure materials.
  3. Preparation, guidance, and prevalence of various standards about the membrane structures
  4. Presenting training courses on the services related to production, construction, etc. of the membrane structures
  5. Cooperation and interaction with the relevant agencies of foreign countries with respect to the membrane structures
  6. Evaluation, certification, judgment, and authentication based on the laws and regulations for buildings including the membrane structures
  7. Other activities needed to reach our objectives

Our History

April 1966 Established as the Tent Structure Research Group.
May 1971 A Notice of Director, Building Guidance Division, Housing Bureau of Ministry of Construction, “How to deal with the temporary buildings of pneumatic structures”, which is based on Article 38 of the Building Standards Act, was issued.
April 1972 Changed the name to Membrane Structures Association of Japan. (MSAJ)
September 1978 Established as Membrane Structures Association of Japan. (MSAJ)
August 1979 Certified by the Minister of Construction with respect to the “tent warehouses” based on Article 38 of the Building Standards Act.
November 1987 Certified by the Minister of Construction with respect to the “special membrane structure buildings” based on Article 38 of the Building Standards Act.
After this certification, MSAJ established the membrane structure building quality control committee, various sub-committees, and expert committees within it, and started the services including the design assessment for the special membrane structure buildings, performance judgment and registration for the membrane materials, and registration of periodical inspection engineers.
July 2002 Public notice No.666 (*1) and No.667 (*2) was issued. Terminated the services conducted under the certification of the Minister based on the former Article 38, including the design assessment for special membrane structure buildings.

September 2002 Amended the articles of incorporation to add the performance evaluation service, Category III regular members, and to increase the executive board members.
November 2003 Amended the articles of incorporation to add the Category IV regular members.
February 2007 Was designated as a performance evaluation organization by MLIT, with regard to the membrane structures, etc.
January 2009 Was designated as a type conformity certification organization by MLIT, with regard to the membrane structures, etc.
February 2009 Opened a booth in the Earthquake Technology Expo (Pacifico Yokohama) to promote membrane ceilings.
