Summary Numerous form-finding methods have been proposed for tension structures. While most of these methods are very effective in finding solutions of nonlinear problems, they usually require some special experiences or tuning techniques in the practical applications. This paper applies the Generalized Steepest Descent Method to find minimal surfaces putting stress on its simple numerical concept. We also apply the method to solve the minimal surface with constraint conditions, which will be proved in the paper as a great help to improve the shape of minimal surface for architectural purposes. Some results of physical soap membrane tests are also illustrated to show the plausibility of the numerical results.e in the result. It found that performing the experiments and identifying the parameter of constitutive equations is required.
